tasty tiny apples, perfect for new eaters
We've been using NBT freeze-dried fruits & veg as snacks for our daughter since a 22-day road trip last summer at age 1... highly recommend! We were able to use food to stave off bored toddler meltdowns WITHOUT making a huge mess in the car or feeding her nutritionless rice puffs for 3 weeks straight, and now at home I can give her an unprocessed snack with zero effort. We always have a couple little tupperware of freeze dried treats in the diaper bag. These apples are a great default snack (who doesn't like cruncy apples?) and the size is perfect for practicing her pincer grasp. Note that they're a little smaller than cheerios, so they'll escape those "no spill" snack cups... a better trail snack vs car for that reason. We mixed these with the other small dice fruits for a sweet baby trail mix (apricots, diced berries, etc). We've moved on to the bigger granny smith chunks now, solely for mess containment :)

    The kids LOVE these!
My kids will devour an entire bag of these freeze dried apples if I let them--- either stirred into oatmeal for extra appley goodness, or just by the handful. :-)

My least favorite freeze dried fruit so far
I was surprised that the peel was still on these apple chunks. In the photo just one piece seems to have a peel on it. This is an issue because the peel was like leather. It never rehydrated enough to be pleasant enough to eat. I had to boil the chunks. Even so...the peels were still rubbery and unappealing. I finally put the fruit through a sieve and got something I could make a tart with. All in all...way too much trouble for what I got out of it. In an emergency situation, I would not call these a reliable resource. The tart tasted pretty good, when it was finally done, however.

    Love these! Oatmeal idea...
I make my own "apple pie" oatmeal mix using these diced FD apples. It beats the pants off of anything that can be purchased in the store! The apples rehydrate really well and taste great. Here's the recipe I came up with for apple pie oatmeal:

    APPLE PIE OATMEAL

    6 cups old-fashioned rolled oats
    1 cup packed brown sugar
    3 Tbsp. powdered butter (optional)
2 cups North Bay Trading FD apple dices
    1 Tbsp. cinnamon
    1 tsp nutmeg
    1/2 tsp. ground cloves
    1/2 tsp. ground allspice
1/2 tsp. Chinese Five Spice powder (optional)
    1 cup powdered milk

Mix all ingredients together well and store in an airtight container.

To serve: In a bowl, mix 1/3 cup oatmeal with 2/3 cup water (1:2 ratio for larger amounts). Microwave 4 minutes (900 watt). Stir and allow to stand for a few minutes until it is cool enough to eat. Enjoy!

Great for kids and adults alike!
These apples are fantastic. My nephew eats very few items, one of them being freeze dried apples. When the brand he ate was discontinued, I set out on a mission to find them.
I located them here and am pleased to say he loves them as much as his previous brand.
My husband and I enjoy them as well, either dry out of the bag, or rehydrated with a little cinnamon atop of waffles. Yum!
We will continue to look out for the next sale to stock up on more.

2 favorite uses for FD diced apples
I put some cinnamon and water in a small bowl, added some of the diced FD apples, sugar is optional, then heated this up in the microwave. Tasted fresher and better than fresh made apple pie, and was a whole lot lower in calories! Or, sprinkle about a half cup of diced FD apples on the batter of the Bisqick coffeecake before you put on the streusel topping, then bake. Delicious!

Great flavor, naturally sweet and tart at the same time. Had this in my morning oatmeal with nuts and freeze dried cranberries. Awesome! Reconstituted very well, great flavors and held shape well. Two thumbs up for sure!

    great in baking!
Added these apples just out of the bag to mincemeat pie, and the pie came out delicious, nice and firm, not soupy. Sprinkled freeze dried apples on cinnamon buns, before rolling up the dough, and the buns were fantastic! Great in hot cereal, too. I'm ordering more!

Diced Freeze Dried Apples

Easy to Prepare

  • Use dry as a healthy snack, as an addition to trail mixes, and as a crunchy topping for cereals and desserts.
  • For most other applications, hydrate by soaking for 5 minutes in a generous amount of cold or hot water (hot water works slightly better). Then drain.

Yield — 1 oz equals about 1 cup dry with less than 4% moisture content.

Rehydration Ratio — 1 lb of freeze dried apples, once rehydrated, equals approximately 10 lbs of fresh prepared diced apples.

Storage — Best if used within 24 months of purchase. Store tightly sealed while minimizing exposure to high humidity and heat.
